Welcome to the second year of the Buddy and Romeo Cartoon Substack!

Found this in the archives today. Nothing like getting the series name wrong in the promotion. The comic strip was called Mates and Dates. When this edition of the paper came out back in August 2015, my eyes spun around in my head like one of the trains on Thomas the Tank Engine.

We’re re-learning how to draw Buddy and Romeo comic strips to produce new work for our forthcoming book Buddy and Romeo: Alone for the Holidays. We’re documenting our creative process in a mini video series called Remembering Buddy and Romeo. It’s been about a month since part two, so join us now for part three as we discuss how we come up with our ideas.

Stick around for part four, in which the characters are drawn.

Did anyone recognize the older couple in wheelchairs watching the parade? We got to watch the parade “with” them at that close distance. We left just after they did before the parade was over and as we were walking up an empty side street (holding hands), the security guard wearing green in the video was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle that drove by us. He smiled warmly and waved as they passed us as if to say “Good luck you two.”

The night before, we dined at the table beside a large party of the aforementioned couple’s grandchildren/grand-nieces/grand-nephews. Who was the couple?! Guess!

Our first cartoon was published in the February 2024 issue of Literary Review!

We’ve been submitting cartoons to Literary Review for about four years so getting one into the magazine at last was a big deal to us. Also a big deal: the Emily Dickinson birthday bash Frega hosted last year for the best and brightest minds in our social circle (I did not attend! Haha!).
