"I See Thou Knowest Me Not, Pinterest."

THIS WEEK:
Weird choices
WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Buddy and Romeo stuffed toys!
BEHIND THE PAY WALL: Emails from Pinterest. PLUS: Romeo plush toy designs go “Back to the Drawing Board”
Buddy and Romeo Cartoon Substack is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support our work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
Illustrators need to be able to draw all sorts of things though time and space. When algorithms don’t understand that, they make some awfully strange recommendations. This week, Buddy and Romeo make some strange choices of their own.
In case you’re new here, last summer, DiPerri started sewing Buddy plush toys for our paid subscribers. After a few machine hiccups, I had to put my progress aside to focus on other work. But the work resumes summer!
Here lies the progress thus far on one the Buddy dolls. I’m doing one step at a time in bulk so every doll is at this stage and looks pretty much like this. His pillow is the faux fur that will be used for his beard. The teal fabric options and threads… those are for Romeo.
That’s right. This summer, I’m finishing the Buddy dolls and then making Romeo dolls (new design sketches are behind the paywall!).
These dolls will not be for sale. Rather, they will be exclusive to paid subscribers of this Substack.
If you want both a Buddy and a Romeo plush doll, please become a paid subscriber. It’s the only way to get them.
Paid subscriptions are $55 for the year. We post each Wednesday so an annual pledge is only $1.06 per week, or $0.15 per day. Some handmade toys on Etsy sell for nearly $100. You’ll get two included with your paid subscription — but only for a limited time.
We hope you’ll consider becoming a paid subscriber today to give your very own Buddy and Romeo stuffed toys a home.
If you’re already a paid subscriber, thank you. Your Buddy dolls are already in progress and your orders for accompanying Romeo dolls are now also in place. I’m excited for more sewing adventures this summer (all of which will be documented here) and to finally see both toys brought to life.
Help us grow!
To my knowledge, I don’t have a Pinterest account and I only end up on their website if I’m looking up references for an illustration. Whenever I receive an email from Pinterest, I just delete it without opening. Over the weekend though, this one caught my eye.
I had to know. Are these ideas so me?! I opened the email. The ideas were decidedly NOT so me but I wasn’t disappointed.
See what Pinterest recommended behind the paywall…
If you’re enjoying yourself at Buddy and Romeo’s expense so far, please consider becoming a paid subscriber. You’ll get exclusive comics and commentaries; behind-the-scenes drawings and project developments; and access to this entire Substack archive. Plus, the more coffee we drink, the more we’ll create.
