THIS WEEK:

  • Something is out of place.

  • Back to the Drawing Board: Color test

  • “Where Are They Now?” The wrong groceries

  • BEHIND THE PAY WALL: The answer key to this week’s out-of-place I Spy.

Career-wise, relationship-wise, and friend-wise, Buddy and Romeo are always in the wrong place at the wrong time. It seems only fitting that their world is comprised of objects out of time too.

I was introduced to the concept of anachronisms during my sophomore year of high school in English class when we read William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. At one point in the play, a clock strikes. This is anachronistic because there were no clocks in ancient Rome when the play is set.

This week, let’s take a look at the anachronistic world of Buddy and Romeo. Can you spot what’s out of place in each comic? Let’s play! Answers behind the paywall!

We’re children of the 1980s and 1990s. My Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and DuckTales Colorforms sets were cherished toys when I was a kid. Wish I still had them.

I’ve been thinking about sticker sheets lately.

Speaking of things that are out of place, here’s a strange and suprising file I happened upon deep within the hard drive catacombs.

The file name is “If this were in color” and is dated January 11, 2015. I don’t know if this was a serious consideration for applying color to the entire first animated short (Good Night! a Buddy and Romeo short) or if it was just testing colors out on the characters. I’m fairly certain Frega had Genevieve’s exact outfit (colors and all) around that time.

We’ve posted it here before but if you’ve never seen Goodnight! a Buddy and Romeo short, check it out here. Animation began in 2014 when we were still developing the characters a year before the comic strip began and the short was completed in 2017.

This doesn’t seem right.

We did this cartoon during the pandemic. Goodness gracious — next week marks five years since we went into quarantine. I guess we know the topic of next week’s post…
